Recently I’ve seen all over social media, people making a homemade play dough, slime-like play mixture using just hair conditioner and corn starch. That’s it. Two simple ingredients that you probably have in your home right now. I’m not sure where the name came from but everyone is calling it “moon dough.”

Because this DIY sounded so easy {and fun} to recreate and we already had the corn starch on hand in our pantry, I was inspired to give it a try with lil man last week.

So drum-roll please – after ONE try, it worked and it was a hit between ALL three of us in the Glued To My Crafts lab.

I don’t know what I was expecting but surprisingly even I really like playing with it. It’s like a cross between a really soft play dough and a sticky, oozy slime mixture. If that makes sense? Sometimes it would get hard in our hands while you were playing with it but then when you drop it back in the bowl, it’s was runny again. It’s seriously so “weird” and soothing, so I highly encourage you to give it a try yourself {especially if you are looking for unique ways to pass some time indoors!}

The only thing I recommend is that you pick a hair conditioner that is either unscented or a scent you REALLY love. I ordered some cheap Suave coconut scented hair conditioner during a Walmart pickup run and although it worked perfectly for our activity, the beachy coconut smell was REALLY overwhelming. It’s just a small something I would change if we repeated this recipe again. If I could go back, I would spend a little more for a more “tame” scent. Possibly something unscented.

MOON DOUGH MATERIALS:

1 Cup Hair Conditioner {try to find something with a light scent or unscented}
2 Cups Corn Starch
optional material for your slime – food coloring
Large Mixing Bowl
Measuring Cups
Mixing Utensil
Jar with Lid for storing {mason jars are great for this!}

Adult supervision is ALWAYS required when making moon dough slime. This project is NOT appropriate for younger children that put things in their mouth.Thoroughly wash your hands before and after making and playing with slime. Please also wear clothes that can get messy.

DIRECTIONS:

First grab your mixing bowl and mixing device.
Measure out your corn starch and place it in the bowl.
Now measure out your hair conditioner and also place that in the bowl.
Using your mixing device, now mix everything together, until well incorporated. You will notice the mixture becoming harder to mix and the moon dough will begin to form.
Now take your moon dough out of the bowl and begin kneading it with both of your hands. IT WILL BE STICKY! BUT AS LONG AS YOU CONTINUE TO WORK IT AND KEEP PULLING IT FROM YOUR HANDS, IT WILL START TO FORM LIKE PLAYDOUGH. THIS TAKES A FEW MINUTES.
Once the mixture is the consistency you like, it’s time to play!
You can even add in a few drops of food coloring if you want to change up the color!
Then play with your new moon dough slime creation and when done, house it in a jar to store for longer play time.
