Rafael Vega-Rodriguez
69 News
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – A Reading man will spend more than four decades behind bars for attempting to kill three FBI agents.
42-year-old Rafael Vega-Rodriguez was sentenced Wednesday in United States District Court to 540 months’ imprisonment, five years of supervised release and a $4,500 fine for shooting at the agents.
The sentence follows Vega-Rodriguez's February conviction on three counts of attempted murder of a federal law enforcement officer, three counts of assault on a federal officer with a deadly weapon and two related firearms charges.
On March 1, 2020, FBI agents were conducting surveillance while looking for Vega-Rodriguez, who was the subject of an active state arrest warrant for a parole violation.
The agents observed the defendant walking with a second individual, and when they attempted to stop and arrest him, Vega-Rodriguez drew a handgun from under his sweatshirt and fired at the agents.
Vega-Rodriguez was arrested two days later in Leola, Pa., approximately 30 miles southwest of Reading.
“Rafael Vega-Rodriguez tried to murder three FBI agents doing their job, which, on that day, was to effect his lawful arrest,” said U.S. Attorney Jacqueline C. Romero.
“He’s proven himself to be a violent, dangerous man, a threat not just to law enforcement, but the community, as well. We’re all safer with him behind bars and today’s sentence ensures that’s exactly where he’ll spend the next several decades of his life.”
