Major supermarket to shut 17 stores - full list of April and May closing dates (2025)

Morrisons has confirmed it will shut 17 stores in the coming days in a bid to "reinvigorate" the company, the retailer confirmed.

The full list of stores confirmed to be closing has now been revealed, with a number of stores set to close as soon as next week.

A total of 16 locations will shut on April 16, with one store remaining open until May before it closes.

Morrisons confirmed last month it would be closing a total of 17 of its smaller Daily-branded convenience stores, alongside a number of its cafes, Market Kitchens, florists, meat counters, fish counters and pharmacies.

Among the locations confirmed to be closing were 11 which had Post Office counters inside. These are also likely to shut but not necessarily on the same dates as their respective stores.

In a statement to The Sun, the Post Office confirmed when its stores in these locations would shut.

It said: "Morrisons has made the difficult decision to close some Morrisons Daily stores, some of which contain Post Offices.

"We fully recognise the inconvenience this will cause for our customers and apologise for the short notification as these branches close between 9 April and 14 May.

"We have reviewed Post Office provision in these areas and for most of these affected branches we are advertising the vacancies."

Post Office branches confirmed to be closing are below:

  • Pheasey Post Office, Birmingham - April 9
  • Fellside Post Office, Whickham - April 9
  • Waterloo Estate Post Office, Poole - April 10

  • Haxby Post Office, York - April 14
  • Crossways Post Office, Croydon - April 15

According to local news reports, it has been suggested the Post Office inside the Shenfield Morrisons store could survive.

Though scheduled to close on April 13, Essex Live has reported the possibility it could be moved further down the road.

Store closures are just one of a number of measures Morrisons is taking as it shakes up its business.

Alongside the Daily store closures, 18 Market Kitchens will shut, as well as 13 florists, 35 meat counters, 35 fish counters and four pharmacies, putting 365 employees at risk of redundancy.

While its cafes are known for their £5 pensioner meal deals and free fruit and breakfast cereals for kids during school holidays, these stores have recently seen price increases of up to 6.25%.

Chief executive Rami Baitiéh said the closures would "reinvigorate" the company and allowmoneyto be invested in other areas.

He continued: "In most locations the Morrisons Café has a bright future, but a minority have specific local challenges and in those locations, regrettably, closure and re-allocation of the space is the only sensible option."

Shoppers reacted with sadness on social media after the closures were announced.

On X, user Michelle described the decision to close the meat and fish counter at the Herne Bay location as "awful".

She added: "Staff, service and selection is great... a huge loss!"

Another user, David Lord, blamed chancellor Rachel Reeves for the cafe closures, which he said were "thanks to your greedy tax hikes!!".

Reeves announced plans in her Autumn Budget to raise employer National Insurance contributions to 15%, and lower the threshold at which this is paid, alongside measures to increase the minimum wage and bring in new protections for workers.

Morrisons's store closures came after Sainsbury's announced similar plans to close 61 of its in-store supermarket cafes on Friday, April 11 after chief executive Simon Roberts said the business faced a "particularly challenging cost environment".
