There was no shortage of high-scoring action during Week 6 of high school football around Central Indiana. Carmel won a marathon thriller, Charlie Spegal ran wild again. Here's a rundown of what you might have missed:
► All eyes have been on New Palestine running back phenom Charlie Spegal this season, and for good reason. But underneath the surface is the story of Spegal's predecessor, who stepped aside to give Spegal the spotlight. Here's what Gregg Doyel saw Friday night.
► It looked like North Central might earn its first win over Carmel since 2005, but the Greyhounds used a late comeback to force overtime -- three of them, in fact. Here's insider Kyle Neddenriep on what unfolded.
► Westfield pushed 6A No. 2 Brownsburg to the brink in the closing seconds, but the play of Bryce Kirtz was enough to help the Bulldogs hang on. Here's correspondent Brent Glasgow on Kirtz's big night.
► Bishop Chatard just keeps on winning. The Trojans took care of a hot Guerin Catholic team. Here's IndyStar correspondent Rich Torres' full-game recap.
► Beech Grove hasa prolific ground game, but the Hornets flashed a new weapon in their win over Monrovia. They can go to the air too. Here's why it made a difference.
Decatur Central 42, Plainfield 21
It was a battle of the running backs as Decatur Central’s Kenny Tracy (14 rushes for 142 uards) and Plainfield’s Tavian Gadia (23 for 178) combined for 320 rushing yards. There was only a total of eight combined receptions from both teams.
“He’s a good, strong back,” Tracy said of Gadia. “He’s short so he can get low, and he’s real strong.”
Gadia finished the game with three touchdowns including scoring runs from 57 and 44 yards. Tracy also broke free for a 61-yard touchdown run. He also scored from two yards out and on an 11-yard pass from quarterback Parker Harrington.
The Class 5A third-ranked Hawks found themselves in great field position several times during the game. Four of the Hawks’ drives began in the red zone as a result of bad snaps by the Plainfield punt unit. The Quakers’ defense did their part in the first half, keeping the Hawks out of the end zone on one of those possessions. The Quakers had six sacks for a total of 41 yards.
“You want to take advantage of what you're given,” Tracy said. “We were able to do that for the most part and got a tough win.” — Mike Williams

Mooresville 55, Franklin 21
Mooresville scored a dominating 55-21 win over Franklin at home Friday night, marking a stark contrast to where the Pioneers were a year ago.
Mooresville coach Mike Gillin said the win was one of the team’s best performances all season.
“We played solid defense, the best defense we’ve played all year,” he said. “We’ve played pretty good offense all year, but last week against Decatur Central we just gave up too much yardage on the defensive side. We worked really hard this week and made some adjustments with our defense (coming into tonight.”
Franklin started the game by scoring first when Peyton Ruble grabbed a 20-yard touchdown reception.
Near the end of the first quarter, Mooresville responded with two touchdowns. The first was a 1-yard run from James Mabry, and the second was a 77-yard reception when Karson Goodman connected with Jon Eineman to take the Pioneers’ first lead of the game — one they wouldn’t relinquish.
In the second half, Franklin added just one touchdown, a quarterback sneak from Drew Byerly. Meanwhile, Mabry scored two more times, and Goodman connected with Eineman once more.
The win marks a complete reversal from the team’s first loss of the season last week, as well as from this point last year when the Pioneers stood 0-6 after a 52-14 loss to Franklin. — Zach Horrall

Brebeuf Jesuit 44, Roncalli 12
Brebeuf Jesuit got off to the best start it could hope for against Circle City Conference rival Roncalli as Braves senior Adam VanderKooy returned the opening kickoff for an 86-yard touchdown.
On Brebeuf’s next possession, junior quarterback Caleb Ellison found fellow junior Gabe Wright on a deep post for a 14-0 lead.
The Rebels attempted to spark the offense late in the second quarter by going for it on fourth down at midfield, but Brebeuf stuffed them at the line to regain possession.
The Braves continued to keep their foot on the gas, taking a 31-0 lead into the half.
Roncalli fought back in the second half, as senior Elijah Mahan scored on the goal line. The Rebels then blocked a punt that was returned for a touchdown, cutting the deficit to 31-12.
Brebeuf shut down the comeback attempt, as Ellison connected with junior Jay Higgins inside the red zone for another Braves’ touchdown. Sophomore running back Isaiah Martin put the exclamation point on the victory, breaking several tackles at the goal line to punch in the final score of the game that gave Brebeuf their first win over Roncalli since an overtime win in 2015. — Aidan Wilkins

Hamilton Southeastern 30, Zionsville 14
Hamilton Southeastern was looking to finditsidentity.
Against Zionsville, the Royals began to find what type of team theyare. HSE dominated the Eagles from start to finishFriday, winning,30-14.
“I thought our kids came out ready to play,” HSE coach Adam Morris said. “We really emphasized starting fast. We just emphasized playing really hard and trying to put a complete game together, offense, defense, special teams. Don’t know if we did that yet, but I thought our kids played hard.”
HSE started off the game by scoring the first 17 points of the game. Both of HSE’s earlytouchdownscame on the ground after long, methodical drives.
The Eagles’first touchdown came late in the first half and HSE’s defense never let Zionsville get going. However, after that touchdown, HSE quickly went down the field for a field goal right before half to go up 20-7.
HSE’s running game continued to find success in the second half. AndZionsville never could get going to get back into the game. The Royals forced Zionsvilleinto two interceptions andtheynever got into a rhythm.
The Royals rushing attack wore down Zionsville’s defense over the course of the night.
“That’s who we want to be,” Morris said. “We want to be spread, but we want to be a physical football team. That’s what we want our identity to be.”— Andrew Hussey

Whiteland 40, Martinsville 21
Whiteland coach Darrin Fisher saw an opportunity in the second quarter Friday night that he just couldn’t pass up.
After his Class 5A No. 4 Warriors took a 14-7 lead, Whiteland caught No. 2 Martinsville off guard with a pooch kick, recovering it inside Artesians’ territory.
Three plays later quarterback Austin Kirkman found Max Brock wide open in the end zone on a 30-yard touchdown pass to give the Warriors a 21-7 lead, and quite possibly a brand new look to the Class 5A standings.
Whiteland led by double digits for the rest of the game on the way to handing Martinsville its first loss of the season, a decisive 40-21 victory against a Mid-State Conference opponent.
“We talked about being the ultimate competitor all week long. The ultimate competitor doesn’t worry about the scoreboard, the ultimate competitor just worries about playing this (next) snap,” Fisher said. “I thought our guys, mentally and emotionally handled the game really well.”
The Warriors handled the game and the Artesians extremely well.
Whiteland compiled 306 yards of total offense, and Jake Perry was the ultimate competitor every time he was on the field. The Warriors running back rushed for 181 yards and scored four touchdowns, each time capping an offensive drive where Whiteland just looked like the team that had more to play for.
“Definitely (thankful) for the front linemen. They’ve been working hard all week. I couldn’t have done it without them,” Perry said. “(We) just try to go 1-0 on every play. Don’t worry about the scoreboard, just go out there and dominate them every play.”
Whiteland’s dominance wasn’t solely on the offensive side of the ball. Once the Warriors took a 21-7 lead, the defense came alive and put pressure on Martinsville quarterback Tyler Griffey on almost every play. Griffey finished the game with two rushing touchdowns.
“We just flat-out got outcoached,” Martinsville coach Carter Whitson said. “Coach Fisher did a great job. His kids played extremely hard and we weren’t quite ready for it. It will be a good slice of humble pie. Hopefully we can stay healthy and get ready for the tournament.”

Scecina 50, Lutheran 7
Lutheran was no match for Scecina on Friday night as the Crusaders cruised to a 50-7 victory.
The Crusaders were able to take an early 14-0 lead on a pair of early touchdowns, including one by highly-recruited receiver David Baker on a pass from senior quarterback Mac Ayres. The Saints quickly answered back with their lone score of the game, a touchdown run from junior Marcus McFadden. The half ended after the Crusaders managed to put up three more touchdowns to put them up 36-7. Scecina senior running back Tavon Middlebrook ended the half with two rushing goal-line scores.
Middlebrook continued that momentum in the second half with a kickoff return touchdown to start the third quarter. The Crusaders defense stood strong with two interceptions. Ayres finished the game with two touchdowns, including the last score of the game on a deep ball to junior receiver Jaidon Barnes.
Scecina is now 5-1 on the season and will take on the undefeated Triton Central.
“They’re an explosive football team. I don’t think many teams have even scored on them this season,” Scecina coach Ott Hurrle said. “We’re going to have to put in a lot of work this week.” — Yousef Abdeldaiem
